A rally held today at noon on Church St. in Burlington urged Ben&Jerry’s to remain a Vermont based company and not to sell out to a multinational corporation.

Speakers included: Vermont Congressman Bernie Sanders, Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle, Vermont Auditor of Accounts Ed Flanagan, VPIRG Executive Director Dave Rapaport, and Ellen Kahler of the Peace and Justice Center.

According to Dave Rapaport of VPIRG, Much is at stake: the strong support Ben&Jerry’s has given to Vermont family farms by paying a premium; commitment to being rBGH free; 700 good jobs; and valuable support for Vermont’s charitable causes. The best interests of Vermont are not served when business decisions impacting workers, the environment, and our communities are made by people working for a multinational conglomerate in a distant city.

About 100 local activists turned out to hear the speakers and see street theater by Bread and Puppet.
